The American Dream (marriage; own a home; 2-3 kids; 2 cars; dog; cat...) is a capitalist invention designed to create consumers who are predictable. The conformity of the 1950s created predictability. The counterculture movement of the 1960s (civil rights, feminism, anti-war, "Eat the Rich..." temporarily jammed the gears of predictability and gave the rebels a sense of power. (Does this sound right?) Today, the capitalist gear-jammers are the 20-somethings who are minimalists when it comes to marriage and consumption. What the capitalists refuse to acknowledge is that a financially healthy middle class produces the ultimate consumer predictability. Greed is stupid.
