Fell asleep on the couch halfway through. I legit thought i was dreaming the Asians with southern accents. It looked like a really expensive Hennessy commercial. Writing was downright awful. Everything about this piece of shit was awful. The sequence at the beginning about Irish culture having a music that saves people or some nonsense. All non-whites are wholesome and speak a secret nice guy vernacular to each other. They all know that the white man is bad. If i actually cared anymore, id try to come up with something more in depth but it would be a waste. Since 2016, every film/tv show written by a black person reeks of them opening a history book for the first time. “Did you know…black Wall Street”. “Did you know black people invented vampires n shit”. They really wuz always kangz.

Sounds like the Howard the Duck of the 2020s just with...racism.

So in other words, it will get more Oscar nominations than The French Connection and Unforgiven combined, and win.

More reviews please!

I was actually just listening to your True Detective review with Last Things, I hadn't heard it since the festival and I forgot how perceptive it was.

There's a drought of honest reviews and I miss them as an artform. Reading clever, well-written TV, film, game and comic reviews used to be such a huge part of my life, before the ideologues came along and ruined them.

Sinners shows how good actors can make a movie lacking story better than it should be. I thought it was aesthetically pleasing, but too much was crammed in for it all to come together on the opening night of this bar. It needed space. Opening the film by establishing that the bar had been open for some time, revealing the history through the tension within the community could have allowed the vampires to use miscommunication as a way to trigger a black and white confrontation in hopes of stealing more souls. It just started way too early and kkk was too forced when it didn’t need to be. Btw. Check out my first short fiction. https://open.substack.com/pub/ladavis87/p/chokes-and-slides?r=1zp5m9&utm_medium=ios

I went to see Sinners after hearing all the initial buzz and praise for it and I totally agree with your review. It's also way too long and it really drags on towards the end. The Klan shootout scene added nothing to the movie and drug out the runtime even more. It was only there to remind the audience that racism exists. I went in expecting a horror movie and ended up just being bored for most of it.

It is an entirely overrated movie but I think it's doing so well just because it is something new and original. It's not a sequel, prequel, remake, "adaptation" or anything connected to an existing franchise or intellectual property. For that fact alone I do have to give it some points.
